Centre Turnpike Toll House Story

Artist Sgt. Chares Waizenegger
This small frame house was located along the Centre Turnpike, just past the hamlet of Germantown.  Phillip and Maria Waizenegger operated the toll house for many years.   Gatekeepers were expected to collect tolls no matter the time of day or night.  A schedule of fees was provided for all forms of traffic.  Elephants could pass for free, because they helped to pack down the road.  When tolls were no longer the collected, the Waizeneggers moved back to Germantown.  (Laurie Ramsdale)
